Is the moon just a small piece of earth?

The Moon is not simply a small piece of Earth, but it is thought to have formed from debris resulting from a collision between a Mars-sized body (often called Theia) and the early Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. This "giant impact hypothesis" suggests that the material from this collision eventually coalesced to form the Moon.

While the Moon shares some chemical similarities with Earth's mantle, it is not just a fragment of Earth. It is now a distinct celestial body, with its own unique characteristics and history.
