If Dr. Strange could defeat Dormammu, why was it difficult for him to stop Thanos?

Dr. Strange's battle against Dormammu and his struggle against Thanos highlight different aspects of power, abilities, and strategic circumstances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

1. Dormammu's Dimension vs. Thanos's Reality: Dormammu is an incredibly powerful entity from the Dark Dimension, where traditional forms of battle don’t apply. Dr. Strange used the Time Stone to trap Dormammu in a time loop, effectively wearing him down with a strategy that Dormammu couldn't counter directly. Strange didn’t outmatch Dormammu in raw power; instead, he outsmarted him with the time loop, forcing Dormammu to negotiate.

2. Thanos's Strength and the Infinity Stones: Thanos, on the other hand, posed a different challenge. He was grounded in the physical universe and had immense physical and mental strength, as well as fighting skills honed over years of conquest. By the time Dr. Strange confronted him, Thanos had collected multiple Infinity Stones, granting him control over time, space, reality, and more, making him far harder to outwit or overpower.

3. Strategic Limitation: Dr. Strange was aware of the possibilities in the fight against Thanos after looking through over 14 million potential outcomes. He foresaw that the only successful path involved the Avengers taking specific actions, including giving up the Time Stone temporarily. Therefore, Strange’s approach was restricted by the necessity to play a role in a larger strategy rather than just directly defeating Thanos.

In short, Dr. Strange’s victory over Dormammu was based on clever use of the Time Stone and Dormammu’s unfamiliarity with time manipulation. In contrast, Thanos was prepared, strong, and empowered by multiple Infinity Stones, requiring a cooperative, strategic approach that went beyond Strange’s individual power.
