How likely is it that the CrowdStrike global IT outage will happen again?

The likelihood of another global IT outage at CrowdStrike is low but not impossible. The incident in July 2024 was caused by a faulty software update to its Falcon security platform, affecting approximately 8.5 million devices running Microsoft Windows. The company has since rolled back the problematic update and rolled out fixes, ensuring that systems running after the patch are not affected. Additionally, CrowdStrike confirmed that the outage was not due to a cyberattack but rather a technical error and is working to improve its update management process to prevent this issue from happening again. However, since such incidents cannot be completely ruled out, especially in the IT world, there is always the risk that similar issues will arise in the future. To mitigate this issue, CrowdStrike and its customers must improve disaster recovery plans, monitoring tools, and resiliency-focused infrastructure.
